TREND REPORT:: IT’S BOB & BANG SEASON

Hair trends come and go but there’s one style that’ll remain the chicest of all, until the end of time: the bob. With its versatility, ranging from flowing shoulder-length to chic chin-grazing cuts, the bob remains a timeless favourite in salons everywhere. Yet, as we step into 2024, one particular variation of this classic cut emerges as the reigning standout—the French bob.

Drawing inspiration from the cropped bobs of the glamorous 1920s, the French bob embodies an effortless sophistication that transcends generations. Unlike its blunt counterparts, the French bob exudes a laissez-faire elegance, embracing natural texture and easy styling. Designed to delicately frame the jawline or sit just above it, this cut accentuates facial features, especially the cheekbones, often complemented by wispy bangs for a touch of vintage allure.

‘French bobs are versatile - you can wear them with long sweeping bangs or a blunter, more structured fringe. However, there is one rule with French bobs - they are cut above the chin. Anything longer will lose that 1920’s French feel’ says Paloma’s Creative Director, Mikki Auld. ‘The short length allows the bob to bell out at the nape and the soft, face framing petals hug the cheekbones and are designed to connect the fringe with the overall length.’

What sets the French bob apart is not just its aesthetic, but also the attitude of those who wear it. Confident, timeless, and effortlessly cool, these women epitomise the essence of French chic—a quality many aspire to embody. Embracing a major chop like the French bob is akin to making a bold statement, ready to conquer every season with unwavering confidence.

Curious about how to achieve the French bob look? ‘Ask your stylist for a jawline-hugging bob with subtle layering to soften any harsh edges.’ says Mikki. When it comes to bangs, the choice is yours—whether you prefer a feathered, feminine fringe, full bangs, or retro-inspired blunt bands, each option adds its own touch of charm to the French bob aesthetic. The beauty of this cut lies in its simplicity, allowing you to embrace your personal style without the need for extensive styling.’

But what distinguishes a bob from its French counterpart? As mentioned above, while both are short hairstyles, the French bob takes it a step further, sitting above the chin for a more refined silhouette. Additionally, the French bob boasts subtle layers and bangs, adding depth and dimension to the overall look— ‘Without the bangs, it again, can lose that French aesthetic and will actually just look a whole lot more modern - straighter lines etc’ Mikki points out.

‘If you’re ready for a big change but are wanting something timeless - I’d highly recommend giving this style a try. To be honest, I don’t see this trend disappearing anytime soon. Anything with a French feel is always going to be on trend.’
