#GIRLBOSS Episode 3: Zoe Davis
Our local Girl Boss series is a project that I have been working on to unite, inspire and share real down-to-Earth stories from local Brisbane girl bosses.
If you’re a creative and aspiring #girlboss, start-uper or just love watching and supporting women in business then be sure to tune in to our YouTube channel (click me!) for more on this series - you won’t want to miss a single episode!
This week on our Girl Boss series, Mikki Auld sits down for a chat with Zoe Davis from Brisbane band, Cub Sport. She is a killer human, bassist and vocalist. We sat down with Zoe Davis to talk about how she stays in the right mindset when it comes to showing up, how she likes to spend time with her fiancé, and her plans before heading off on tour!
Mikki: Thank you so much for being here today! Something I love about M.A.H. is that we’ve really attracted this like-minded creative community, we love having you in the salon - so I think our community is going to love seeing our chat today and learning a little bit more about you and your journey with Cub Sport. A big part of your job would involve showing up with the right mindset, you’re on stage and in front of thousands of people at times. Has there ever been moments where you’ve felt like you’re just not in the right mindset and what do you do to combat that?
Zoe: It can be pretty mentally and physically exhausting touring, sometimes you’re more tired than other times, but I guess it’s just important to notice when you need to take time to yourself and just chill out. Find someone to talk to about things and that’s all really.
Mikki: This is one of my favourite questions because I know I’ve made a lot of fuck ups but what have been some of your biggest fuck ups to date, and how you over come those?
Zoe: I don’t have any specific examples but I think business mistakes are important because it’s what you learn from. It might seem bad when you make them but they’re always important for a business to make.
ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS WE’VE LEARNT IS TO ALWAYS TRUST YOUR GUT.
Mikki: If something doesn’t feel right -
Zoe: it’s probably not right.
Mikki: You and your beautiful girlfriend, Bridie, got engaged earlier this year which is super exciting - and congratulations. Obviously you’re away a lot with the band, you have so much going on and you’re a really busy gal - how do you make sure that you’re taking time out of your work to be present in your relationship with Bridie and are somethings that you do
Zoe: When I’m on tour we just try to make sure that we’re talking constantly and Skyping when we can, between calls. When I am here, we just try to make sure we do nice things all of the time and spend lots of quality time together.
Mikki: What are some things you like doing together?
Zoe: I really like going on bush walks, and to nice restaurants.
Mikki: Yeh, nice! What is the number 1 online tool that you use or that Cub Sport uses to make your life a little bit easier and streamline?
Zoe: The number 1 thing probably that we use is Master Tour, when we are touring. It’s just an app that you can put all of the information about shows and travel and things like that - it just makes it really easy.
Mikki: So you’ve only got really a couple of weeks until you hit the road again. What are some things that you are going to be doing in Brisbane with the time you’ve got left here?
Zoe: I’ve got a few band practices to do. I’ve got to get all organised to go, I think I’m gone for about 8 weeks this time! But yeh, a little holiday at the start in America. So that will be good.
Mikki: Nice! Where are you going to go?
Zoe: We’re going to Palm Springs, L.A., Santa Barbara and Joshua Tree, for about 10 days.
Mikki: That’ll be amazing!
