FANCY A REFRESH? HERE’S THE 411 ON GLOSS SERVICES

Embarking on a journey to transform your hair colour can be both exciting and bewildering, especially for those not well-versed in the intricacies of hairdressing terminology. Among the many questions that often arise, toners (or glosses as we at PR prefer to call them), frequently take centre stage in curiosity. At Paloma Roan, we understand the importance of clarifying the unknown, and to shed light on this, our lead educator and Master Stylist, Bella, is here to unravel the basics of glossing, and why it holds such significance in the realm of hair colouring.

In essence, a glosses primary role is to adjust the 'tone' of your colour. Unlike permanent colour, which alters the depth, glosses modify the reflect, creating a warmer or cooler finish. Bella emphasises, "At Paloma Roan, we frequently use toners/glosses on blondes and balayage. After lightening the hair, the gloss becomes instrumental in achieving the desired final colour – be it a buttery, golden blonde or an ashy, silver-toned look.”

Yet, glosses aren't exclusive to blondes – brunettes and redheads can also benefit. They prove invaluable in combating brassiness or undesired tones caused by environmental stress, harsh products, heat, or sunlight. "Sun exposure can sometimes alter the reflect, lightening or warming up the hair,” says Bella. “A gloss helps neutralise or eliminate these tones without darkening the overall hair colour.”

Interestingly, glosses play a crucial role in softening colour and achieving a more subtle look. After a balayage, for instance, Bella often turns to glosses as "it's a great way to seamlessly blend the blonde with your natural colour, resulting in a more natural-looking finish."

Unlike permanent colour, toners/glosses cannot lighten the hair and are semi-permanent, gradually washing out over time. To prolong the vibrancy of your colour, Bella offers practical advice on washing habits: "washing your hair less frequently (when possible), and opting for a high-quality sulfate-free shampoo is key. Sulphates strip colour faster, making a sulfate-free option like our Kevin Murphy or OWAY range a great choice. They’re both 100 percent sulfate-free and include natural proteins to strengthen hair and enhance colour retention."

Whether you're seeking a richer hue or aiming to eliminate unwanted tones, a gloss provides the perfect means to subtly adjust your colour, ensuring a natural-looking shade that suits you perfectly.
